Sounds of artillery continue on SKorean island

YEONPYEONG ISLAND, South Korea – The sounds of artillery are still being heard on a front-line island where South Korea has been conducting live-fire drills.

Yonhap news agency had reported earlier that South Korea ended the maritime drills from the island attacked last month by North Korea. But an Associated Press photographer on the island said the sounds of firing are continuing.

South Korea says it has launched fighter jets to deter any North Korean attacks during the drills on Yeonpyeong.

The island was shelled by the North after similar drills last month. Two marines and two civilians were killed.

The North considers the waters around Yeonpyeong its territory and has threatened to retaliate for any new drills.
